As winter gradually fades and the promise of spring looms on the horizon, it’s time to shift our focus to the care of our lawns. Our grass endures harsh conditions during the colder months—short days, diminished light, and saturated soil – all of which can leave it longing for the revitalisation that spring brings. With a little planning and effort, you can ensure that your lawn emerges from winter stronger and healthier than ever.

Tidying Up for Spring

One of the first tasks in preparing your lawn for spring is to clear away any debris that may have accumulated over the winter months. Fallen leaves, twigs and other debris not only detract from the appearance of your lawn but can also harbour pests and diseases that may threaten its health. A clean, clutter-free lawn sets the stage for vibrant growth in the coming season.

Inspecting your lawn for any signs of pests or diseases is also essential. Insect grubs, in particular, can wreak havoc on turfgrass if left unchecked. Be sure to read our Turf Care article for guidance on identifying and addressing common lawn pests.

Mowing Matters

Depending on the weather conditions and your lawn drainage, you may find yourself mowing as early as February to herald the arrival of spring. When mowing for the first time after winter, raise the blades to avoid cutting the grass too short, allowing it to recover and thrive.

Climate change and erratic weather patterns like flash floods and storms can disrupt mowing schedules. Increased rainfall may saturate lawns, making them unsuitable for mowing, while storms can leave behind debris. Adjusting mowing frequency in response to these challenges ensures optimal lawn care despite changing weather conditions.

Scarification and Feeding

Spring presents an ideal opportunity to scarify your lawn—a process that removes thatch and promotes healthy new growth by allowing air and nutrients to penetrate the soil more effectively. Additionally, feeding your lawn with appropriate fertilisers provides the essential nutrients needed for lush, vibrant growth throughout the spring and summer months.

Border Control

As spring unfolds, take the time to establish clear boundaries between your lawn and garden borders. Using a half-moon edging iron or flat-bladed spade, create a defined ‘gutter’ around your lawn to prevent grass from encroaching into your flower beds and borders—an unwelcome sight that can result from neglect over the winter.

March Lawn Care Tips

Here are some quick tips to help your lawn throughout March and help you prepare for the spring months.

  • As we go through March you can start to gradually reduce the mowing height, be careful not to do this too quickly though.
  • Collect grass clippings with a grass box to maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Regularly brush the ground to remove debris and encourage healthy growth.
  • Roll the surface with a garden roller to ensure a level, uniform lawn.
  • Apply fertiliser designed for spring/summer applications, watering it into the topsoil if rain is scarce.

Planning for Success

The key to a thriving lawn lies in thoughtful planning and consistent care. With climate change bringing about increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, it’s more important than ever to anticipate the needs of your garden and adapt accordingly. By taking proactive steps to prepare your lawn for spring, you can ensure that it remains a lush, inviting oasis for relaxation and enjoyment throughout the warmer months ahead. Start planning today, and reap the rewards of a vibrant, healthy lawn tomorrow.
