Our History

1985

The year Inturf was born

Inturf was founded by specialist horticulture expert Derek Edwards, who set up a company that could supply turf for a whole host of purposes, developing unique mixes to suit all requirements. This included low maintenance turf, drought resistant turf, reinforced turf and much more. Always keen to innovate, Derek adapted traditional cultivating machines to make them more efficient – meaning we could better support our customers.

1990

Revolutionising turf installation

In the early 90’s we revolutionised turf installation with the big roll format. This innovation helped to improve pitches from a muddy surface to a returfed green oasis of grass. The big roll format is 30 to 40mm deep and provides endurance through tough use and heavy footfall. This format is still used today at Wembley and many top end football venues so, the legacy lives on. Parliament Square also benefited from our 40mm big roll format in the recent years during a landscaping project with Inscapes.
1992

We make history

We make history as the first turf grower to earn BS5750 Quality Assurance accreditation from the British Standards Institute. By this time, we’d established ourselves as one of the region’s leading turf suppliers, working on golf courses, football pitches, racecourses, cricket grounds, stately homes and much more. Plus, we’d invested in French turf company Express Gazon and helped relay the pitch of France’s national stadium, Parc des Princes, ahead of the 5 Nations rugby tournament.

1996

Methley Terrace

We turfed the whole of Methley Terrace, a street in Leeds, ahead of the ‘Streets for the People’ campaign. This included temporarily turfing 100 yards of the road as well as the local school. On the turf, the Methley Olympics took place as well as an outdoor cinema.

1997

We launched Millennium Turf

We launched Millennium Turf, a mixture of ten of our most advanced grass species, that would be perfect for landscaping and lawns and would be available from 2000 to mark the new millennium. In the same year, we also relayed the turf at Wimbledon’s iconic Centre Court, and at a top-secret location in Warwickshire, we were called upon to provide turf for a new children’s TV programme called Teletubbies.

1999

Innovation at the Millennium Stadium

We installed a modular turf system at the new Millennium Stadium for Laings and The Welsh Rugby Union. This revolutionary American-developed system was adapted for the UK, featuring removable, palletised pitch system. This innovation allowed the turf to be easily transported outside the stadium, protecting it from damage during non-sporting events.
