What is Topsoil Used For?

Topsoil is a versatile resource used in various landscaping projects, including:

Gardens: Topsoil provides a fertile foundation for growing plants, vegetables and flowers. It contains essential nutrients and organic matter necessary for healthy plant growth. We would strongly recommend the use of a pre turf fertiliser or a soil conditioner for planting, such as TerraCottem.

Commercial Landscaping: Professional landscapers use topsoil to create rich green spaces, ensuring a beautiful and sustainable environment for commercial properties.

Turfing: Whether you’re establishing a new lawn or renovating an existing one, topsoil is crucial for achieving a smooth and healthy turf.

Planting: Trees and shrubs thrive when planted in nutrient-rich topsoil, promoting strong root development and overall growth.

Top Dressing for Lawns: During lawn renovations, topsoil can be used as a top dressing to improve the soil structure and provide a nutrient boost to the grass.

How Much Topsoil Do I Need?

The amount of topsoil you need depends on the area you plan to cover and the desired depth. To calculate the quantity required:

1. Determine the area’s length and width in meters (e.g., 10m x 10m = 100 square meters).

2. Decide on the desired depth of topsoil (e.g. 100mm).

Calculation: Area (m²) x Depth (m) = Total Cubic Meters

   For example: 100m² x 100mm = 10 cubic meters.

Keep in mind that the depth required may vary. For instance, a returfing job might need less than 50% of the calculated depth, depending on your specific project. But don’t worry, if you are unsure measure the area you want to cover and give us a call to talk through your garden project and requirements. Our team are more than happy to help you understand the quantity required and point you in the right direction.

How Much Topsoil for Turf & How Deep Should It Be?

When laying turf, the recommended depth for topsoil is typically around 100mm. However, this depth can vary depending on your project’s requirements. For returfing, you might need less topsoil, but it’s essential to assess your specific situation and consult with a professional if necessary.

How to Lay Turf on Topsoil?

Laying turf on topsoil is a straightforward process that ensures a healthy and thriving lawn. It can help to improve grass growth by enriching soil quality with nutrients and organic matter. It creates a level, weed-suppressing surface, encourages strong root development and enhances overall lawn appearance. Topsoil is particularly useful in areas with poor soil quality, promoting uniform growth.

1. Remove existing turf and weeds.

2. Rotovate the soil underneath to improve its structure.

3. Remove any debris or rocks from the area.

4. Spread a layer of topsoil evenly over the prepared soil.

5. Optionally step, apply fertiliser, such as TerraCottem, depending on the soil type.

6. Lay the turf on top of the prepared soil and water it thoroughly.

How do you Apply Topsoil Over Existing Turf?

If you’re renovating an existing lawn, applying topsoil can breathe new life into it. The topsoil enriches the existing soil with essential nutrients and organic matter, rejuvenating the lawn and promoting healthier grass growth. This process can also level uneven surfaces, improving the lawn’s aesthetics and creating a smoother appearance.

1. Apply a thin layer of topsoil (around 5mm deep) evenly over the existing turf.

2. Use a rake to level the topsoil and remove any unwanted debris.

3. Gently brush the topsoil into the existing grass.
